America’s Finest City just got even finer. The San Diego International Airport New Terminal 1 has opened a new three-lane airport access roadway that bypasses local traffic and provides faster, direct access to the new Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The improved roadway is estimated to remove up to 45,000 cars from North Harbor Drive daily.
Upgrades include nine new bridges and a dedicated space reserved for a future public transit connection, supporting long-term regional growth and sustainability.
Parking Plaza Stage Two is also now open, adding approximately 2,400 new spaces, bringing the total to more than 5,200 — with 1,000 reserved for carpools, EVs and fuel-efficient vehicles.
In September, the new access roadway will connect to a dual-level system that separates arriving and departing traffic, with an elevated departures roadway and curbside outdoor check-in.
FlatironDragados, in a joint venture with Turner, is leading the largest infrastructure project in San Diego International Airport’s history. The New Terminal 1 will open to travelers in September 2025.
