Before airplanes can take to the sky, infrastructure must be built and maintained on the ground.
For Aviation Week, we’re highlighting our long partnership with Denver International Airport, where FlatironDragados has helped expand and improve one of the world’s busiest and largest airports. We’ve expanded concourses, built new gates, aprons, and mechanical levels, and made extensive upgrades to both airside and landside areas. Learn about just a few of our many projects at DEN:
Concourse Expansion Program
FlatironDragados and joint venture partner Turner Construction expanded two concourses to help Denver International Airport prepare to serve 100 million passengers annually. The program added 28 gates and nearly 900,000 square feet of new space, including charging stations and outdoor decks.
The team also improved utility infrastructure, expanded aircraft fueling and deicing facilities and incorporated a rooftop solar array. Much of the work was delivered ahead of schedule and designed to meet LEED Gold v4.0 criteria.
Taxiway EE Grading, Drainage, Paving and Lighting
FlatironDragados constructed a 4,500-foot taxiway that provides a critical cross-field connection and increases operational capacity at Denver International Airport. The new route also eliminated an FAA-designated “hot spot” where aircraft faced a heightened risk of collisions or runway incursions.
The team moved more than 800,000 cubic yards of earth and placed more than 65,000 square yards of concrete pavement while relocating critical FAA infrastructure— completing the project two months ahead of schedule.
United Airlines Remote Aircraft Parking Pad
The United Airlines Remote Aircraft Parking Pad is designed to provide United Airlines with additional storage capacity, accommodating up to 20 narrow-body aircraft, or up to five larger wide-body aircraft. The team paved more than 100,000 square yards of apron and incorporated more than 60,000 tons of recycled concrete aggregate into the project and mix designs.
The project earned an Excellence in Concrete Paving Award in the Industrial/Commercial Paving category from the American Concrete Pavement Association Colorado/Wyoming Chapter.
Peña Boulevard Phase 1B
FlatironDragados is upgrading the section of Peña Boulevard between Jackson Gap Street and the terminal, improving the primary gateway to Denver International Airport. Upgrades include a new diverging diamond interchange and widened bridges that will enhance mobility and reliability for tens of millions of drivers annually. The project received Envision Silver recognition for its sustainable infrastructure and responsible project delivery.
Taxiway DS East and Deicing Pad
FlatironDragados built a 2,500-foot taxiway and nine deicing positions to improve traffic flow and expand winter operations. Completed within budget and two months ahead of schedule, the project earned the American Concrete Pavement Association Colorado/Wyoming Chapter’s 2025 Commercial Service and Military Airports Award.
Concourse A Gate Apron Rehabilitation and Drainage Improvements
FlatironDragados upgraded the ramp area of Gate A31. The team rehabilitated concrete pavement, addressed drainage deficiencies and modernized utility and aircraft fueling systems. Four coordinated construction phases allowed the airport to remain operational while the team completed these improvements with minimal disruption.
