From Navy Networks to Corporate IT Security

Electronics technician turned IT security director Jason Tamez credits his Navy service with teaching him the crisis management skills and mission-focused mindset that drive his success in protecting corporate systems today.

After growing up in a small rural town and searching for direction following college, IT Security Director Jason Tamez found his path in the U.S. Navy. “I wanted to see more of the world and build a solid foundation for my life,” Jason said.

He enlisted in 1997 for a six-year term, longer than most, due to the Navy’s extensive technical training. Officially an electronics technician, Jason soon found himself managing his command’s computer network, a role that demanded adaptability and hands-on learning. “The Navy didn’t have a formal IT program at the time, so I learned systems administration and network operations on the job,” he said. “That experience became the bedrock of my future career.”

Jason’s military training proved invaluable, especially in high-pressure situations. “If a critical system failed, the stakes were immediate and high,” he said. “I learned to compartmentalize stress, focus on the problem and execute a plan, skills I rely on today in IT security, where protecting systems and data is critical.”

He draws on habits from his service every day: a proactive mindset, preventive maintenance and a strong sense of ownership. “In the Navy, your equipment’s performance reflected on you. I’ve carried that responsibility into every role since,” he said.

Transitioning to civilian IT security was a natural step. “I raised my hand when my duty station needed someone for IT,” Jason said. “The mix of on-the-job training and self-study prepared me for a civilian career, and my service played a key role in landing my first job out of the Navy.”

Jason’s advice for veterans:

  • Translate your experience. Focus on what you accomplished, not just your title.
  • Use your education benefits. The GI Bill can be a powerful bridge to civilian careers.
  • Get certified. Civilian certifications help validate your skills.
  • Network with other veterans. Connections can open doors.

Veterans, he said, bring a mission-oriented mindset, a blend of respect for process and the ability to improvise under pressure. “We know how to follow the playbook and when to adapt,” Jason said.

Leadership, risk and resilience are core to Jason’s approach. “Leadership is about initiative and trust. Risk is real and must be managed daily. Resilience is forged under pressure, learning, experimenting and delivering when there’s no one else to call.”

Jason’s story is a testament to the value, adaptability and leadership veterans bring to the workplace. In recognition of this year’s National Hire a Veteran Day, we’re proud to share about FlatironDragados’ veteran team members.
