Engineers build skills for what comes next
An engineer’s decisions can influence nearly every part of a job, from safety and schedule to cost, quality and productivity. At this year’s Engineer Forum, FlatironDragados engineers explored how the company’s Operating Principles help guide those decisions and contribute to project success.
Held in Atlanta, the annual forum brought engineers together for three days of technical learning, candid discussion and hands-on problem-solving. CEO Javier Sevilla addressed attendees, connecting FlatironDragados’ strategy and Operating Principles to the choices teams make every day.
FlatironDragados designed the program to equip engineers with skills and knowledge to support their career development. Sessions led by Project Controls, Commercial Management and Environmental showed how support departments provide expertise, help teams manage risk and contribute to successful outcomes. Attendees also worked through real-life case studies involving schedule, productivity and risk, then considered how planning and collaboration could change the outcome.
Project spotlights gave those lessons in real-world context. Presenters shared insights from work across the water, marine, bridge, tunnel, high-speed rail and transit market sectors, highlighting the range of complex challenges FlatironDragados teams solve.
The forum also prepared engineers for the future of engineering and construction. Participants explored artificial intelligence, data analytics, drone technology and the company’s Digital Services Group. Technical sessions delved into mass concrete and formwork design, providing engineers with knowledge they can apply in the field.
Beyond technical skills, the program encouraged engineers to consider how they communicate, what they can learn from colleagues in other roles and where their careers could take them. A career panel with company leaders highlighted the extensive opportunities available to early-career employees across FlatironDragados.
Grounded in the Operating Principles: Safety, People Focused, Excellence, Collaboration and Risk Management, the forum reinforced FlatironDragados’ commitment to developing its employees and giving them the knowledge, resources and connections to strengthen project performance.
