2025Project Overview
The Los Angeles International Airport Automated People Mover is a new airport-based train system that will provide access to terminals, parking, rental cars, Metro station and pick-up and drop-off curbs. The LAX Automated People Mover will reduce airport vehicle travel by 117,000 miles daily.
As LAX’s first design-build-finance-operate-maintain procurement project, the Automated People Mover is the cornerstone of five projects making up the broader Landside Access Modernization Program. The other construction initiatives consist of a consolidated rental car facility, intermodal transportation facility-west, an airport station that connects to the Metro transportation system and roadway improvements throughout the airport area.
The Automated People Mover project includes:
- A 2.25-mile elevated guideway with six stations, pedestrian bridges and an automated system that can operate up to nine trains simultaneously
- Trains each carrying up to 200 passengers with luggage and a total ride duration of 10 minutes end-to-end
- A ridership capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour, or 87.7 million per year, with trains arriving every two minutes during peak hours
