2023Project Overview
As part of the massive development of the new Lake Ralph Hall reservoir, the project constructed two bridges and other roadway work. Completed in 2023, these bridges provide an efficient way to cross the reservoir, which is due to open in 2026.
At more than one mile long, the North Sulphur Bridge allows State Highway 34 to continue over the body of water. Along with Merrill Creek Bridge, the two structures provide safe passage for pedestrians and bicyclists as well as vehicles.
Expected to hold 59 billion gallons of water, the reservoir will serve the growing water needs of booming North Texas communities. The reservoir also will provide recreational opportunities, including fishing and boating.
The project was the Texas Department of Transportation’s first initiative to use the progressive design-build delivery method. This collaborative model helped build a strong and transparent relationship with the client, Upper Trinity Regional Water District.
