2031Project Overview
The North/West Battery Park City Resiliency project will create a flood-barrier system in lower Manhattan from the Tribeca neighborhood through Battery Park City.
The current floodplain affects 120 buildings and 25,000 residents. It includes the World Trade Center transit hub and key regional infrastructure, World Trade Center Memorial and Museum, Museum of Jewish Heritage and other cultural and educational institutions.
The completed project will:
- Protect against future storm surge from the Hudson River using a mix of fixed and moveable barriers
- Safeguard against significant rainfall events through the reconfiguration of interior drainage storm and sanitary systems
- Feature a future pump station along Route 9A
- Eliminate homeowners’ need to purchase flood insurance for federally backed mortgages
- Receive certification for meeting Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines, which represent the gold standard for creating resilient, ecological and accessible waterfronts
