2027Project Overview
This complex resiliency project is using a comprehensive urban stormwater management strategy to address surge flooding from coastal storms and recurring inland rainfall flooding. Mitigating the impacts of major storm surges and heavy rainfall will safeguard vulnerable communities in the highly developed urban areas of northern New Jersey.
The project includes:
- Constructing more than 9,000 linear feet of reinforced concrete floodwalls of varying heights
- Installing 28 floodgates including rolling floodgates, swinging flood gates, and stoplog barriers
- Incorporating urban landscape architectural elements affixed or adjacent to the floodwall, such as seating, planters, lighting, and educational signs
- Improving landscaping at Harborside Park, which borders the Hudson River
Once completed, the project will reduce risk to public health and lower FEMA flood insurance rates by removing 80% of the city from flood zones. At the same time, it will improve community resiliency and amenities, including better public access to the waterfront.
